Why Sankara

Sankara is an Indian name which means Causer of tranquillity". I found the name in a book that my mother used to choose mine and my siblings’ names. Given its meaning, the name seemed very fitting for a small business selling cushion covers.

My mom and my grandmother both worked in textiles and home decor. Growing up in Mumbai, my mother began collecting early on antique textiles and a selection of new prints, which she then used to build a small business when she moved to Switzerland. Her shop was a colourful trove of wonders.

I decided that I wanted to continue the family tradition of working with fabrics from India. Hand-block printing seemed like the best way to start. This technique has been practiced for generations in specific regions of India such in Rajasthan and Andhra Pradesh. The techniques have been in part digitalized by some workshops, with patterns being created on screen, while other workshops still work by carving the woodblocks and then printing by hand. Being hand-made, you see small imperfections in the prints, which give a distintictive feel to the textiles.

All the dyes are natural, extracted by roots and minerals.
